From the Instructor:
Get ready to create fabric that is as unique as your next handmade bag! Whether you are new to natural dyeing and eco-printing, or a seasoned pro, our natural dye kit makes it easier (and more fun) than ever. Just add water, sit back, and watch the magic unfold as vibrant, natural eco materials transform your fabric into a masterpiece. Perfect for bag exteriors, linings, or any project that deserves a pop of personality, this is pure, colorful magic—neatly packed into a jar and ready for you to make fiber magic. All organic and all natural.
The kit includes a yard of pre-mordanted organic linen, and a generous sprinkling of logwood chips, organically grown flowers (like hydrangea, calendula, marigold and other natural dye flowers) and ground madder root. Dye is processed in a large mason jar. I will bring the kettle for hot water! You can choose to dye your linen a solid color or use the
included flowers for eco-printing. There should be enough left over dye material to dye another yard or two of fabric (and I will bring some extra in case you want to have another go).
The process is – we will choose our dye color and flowers, arrange the flowers on the linen in whatever arrangement the student likes, tie up the fabric and put it in the mason jar. I will then fill the jar with hot water (from safe kettles I will bring) and we wait an hour (or overnight in this case). The following day, we will unwrap the fabric and view our lovely hand-dyed fabric. We will rinse in a bucket and it can be ironed dry (if that is available) or put in a zip-lock to take home or back to the hotel for ironing dry. The cost is higher than a demo might regularly be, but everyone will receive a kit and extra dye material, along with a little written instruction booklet.
